Surgery is a medical facility that uses both operative manual and instrumental techniques on a diagnosed patient with the purpose to treat him/her from a disease or an injury or to improve the functionality or appearance of a body part. The subject of a surgery could be a person or an animal and the person who performs a surgery is a surgeon. The instruments used in a surgery are known as surgical instruments.

Surgery can last for a few minutes to several hours, depending upon the subject and the condition of the reason behind the surgery. Generally, it is a continuous process and is the treatment doesn’t happen periodically. As a rule, the procedure is considered a surgery only if there is a cutting of the patient’s tissues or the closure of a wound is involved. A surgery could be an elective surgery, where the cause of surgery is not life threatening; and Emergency surgery, where there is an urgency associated with the surgery.
